Even when cars were new back in the 1940's and 50's the vaccum windshield wipers always needed a little help. The popular solution during the depression days was Bull Durham tobacco sold in the little cotton pouches. By rubbing the windshield with the tobacco pouch the tobacco juice would rub off on the windshield.

When vacuum wipers were popular, part of having your car serviced at the dealership was the wiper motor service. The mechanic would squirt brake fluid into the vaccum hose off of the manifold. The vaccum would carry the brake fluid up to the vaccum motor where it would lubricate the "leathers" inside of the motor to keep them soft. |
